Social Harvest is an urban farm and social enterprise program run by the Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre based in Ottawa. We first began as a way of addressing the issues of food insecurity in our community by offering a variety of programs to improve people’s food literacy skills. Currently, our most significant hurdle to cross is reaching out to as many people as possible and informing them of the services we offer such as workshops, community gardening, and internships besides producing a range of crops. By doing this, we hope to improve public engagement and urban agricultural skills to serve the community better for the long term.
One of the major philosophies we hold at Social Harvest is the importance of education at all life stages. By leading the charge, we made it our commitment to support individuals in fighting food insecurity in urban environments. We believe access to nutritious, homegrown food should be a right for everyone.
At our facility (where you can hopefully visit soon) you will first see our outdoor greenhouse where we grow all of our produce. There we cultivate a number of crops including herbs, microgreens, and vegetables that will reach our consumers through our sister enterprises, Market Mobile, Good Food Box, and the Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Centre Food Bank. If you’re at all interested in keeping up-to-date with Social Harvest, we have a monthly newsletter you can sign up on our website. You can also follow us on Instagram and Facebook for food tips and events we will be hosting.
